16 Heartbreaking Photos That Show The Devastating Effects Of Hurricane Harvey

Hurricanes are a stark reminder of the devastating power of nature. Hurricane Katrina sent shockwaves around the US when it devastated New Orleans back in 2005, and the damages caused by this natural disaster are still being repaired to this day. Sadly, Hurricane Harvey is currently causing equally – if not more – catastrophic damage in Texas.

What makes this disaster all the more poignant is that Hurricane Harvey struck Huston on the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It is one of the worst natural disasters to hit the US in years, and so far Hurricane Harvey has caused 31 confirmed deaths and billions of dollars worth of damage.

These photographs of its devastating effects demonstrate why the US must work together during this difficult time.

Whilst the effects of Hurricane Harvey have been devastating, the way people have responded is testament to the good in humanity. People have came together to ensure that no one gets left behind, and some have gotten incredibly creative with their rescue efforts – showing that even the biggest of storms can’t keep them down.

Even though Hurricane Harvey was unprecedented, its occurrence from a scientific point of view is no surprise. Last year was the hottest on record in the US, and this was a direct result of the planet heating up because of global warming. Unless drastic action is taken, catastrophes like this will simply become more common.

The severity of hurricanes like Harvey is affected by a number of factors and these include high temperatures which cause high sea levels. In fact, it wasn’t until Hurricane Harvey reached the Gulf of Mexico that its intensity suddenly increased because of above average temperatures, and it became a deadly force of nature.

Climate expert Robert Kopp ominously predicted a hurricane of this severity in June. “In the absence of major efforts to reduce emissions and strengthen resilience, the Gulf Coast will take a massive hit,” he said. “Its exposure to sea-level rise – made worse by potentially stronger hurricanes – poses a major risk to its communities.”

Once this disaster is over, the US needs to work together to heed Robert Kopp’s advice about cutting down our emissions – and that can be as simple as using public transport more often – so that similar disasters do not happen in the future. As it stands, around 30,000 Texans have been left homeless.

President Trump is now doing everything in his power to ensure that the death toll from this disaster does not considerably rise. “We will get through this,” President Trump said of the disaster. “We will come out stronger, and believe me, we will be bigger, better, stronger than ever before.”

As Hurricane Harvey continues to reek havoc on the state of Texas, we hope people will continue to band together to get through this difficult time and that suitable action is taken in an attempt to prevent a similar disaster in future.
