There is an assumption in society that people with symmetrical faces are inherently more attractive than people with more uneven features. And this is because people who happen to have perfectly even facial features mirror society’s vision of flawless beauty.
Some might say facial symmetry is overrated though. People are constantly redefining what it means to be beautiful:
When someone tells you that you have a symmetrical face, although it may seem oddly specific, bizarrely mathematical even, it’s meant to be a huge compliment. So what does it even look like?
Well, it is often said that these celebrities have perfectly symmetrical faces:
Natalie Portman, for example, is believed to be a poster girl for beauty in symmetry.
And if you were to draw an imaginary line down Megan Fox’s face (please don’t actually do it, she’ll probably sue you), then you’d believe both sides would be exactly the same.
Charlize Theron is another stunning actress many people believe is symmetrical in the facial area.
And finally, Miranda Kerr looks like she could have a mirror balanced on her nose.
Yeah, these women are certainly beautiful by many people’s standards, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that facial symmetry does not always make people look more attractive. In fact, sometimes it actually makes them look a whole lot worse.
And how do I know this? Well, with editing tools like Photoshop, we can show you what some of the world’s biggest stars would look like if their faces were actually symmetrical, and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be…
See, didn’t I tell you that not everyone suits facial symmetry – Adele almost looks like a mystical creature on the left. And on the right is the authentic Adele that we all know and love.
2. Victoria Beckham
Posh Spice may not be much of a smiler but there’s no doubt about the fact that she looks incredible for her age. And let’s face it – she looks tons better in the unmanipulated photo featuring her not-so-symmetrical face. Her “symmetrical” face looks far too gaunt than her naturally slightly plumper face.
3. Emilia Clarke
The Mother of Dragons, everyone (that will never get old). Now, she doesn’t look terrible with a symmetrical face but it definitely feels like something is missing on the bottom half of her face.
4. Kim Kardashian
She’s one of the most famous reality TV stars in existence, renowned for her curves, rapper husband and… well, not much else. But as it turns out, the difference between her symmetrical face and her non-symmetrical is quite subtle, and I have to admit that symmetry definitely wins here.
Meet the woman who thinks she’s too attractive to find love:
5. George Clooney
Again, the difference between these two “versions” of his face is quite subtle, but nothing beats the original Clooney.
6. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
With a body as ripped as his, who needs symmetry? Especially when symmetrical features make him look like a shell of his former self.
7. Taylor Swift
If facial symmetry means taking away from Tay Tay’s famous red lips, then it was never really worth it to begin with.
8. Tom Hanks
At 6ft, Tom Hanks is no short man. So why does facial symmetry make him look like a hobbit?!
9. Liam Gallagher
Why has Liam’s face suddenly shrunk in size? I guess symmetry will do that to a person.
10. Johnny Depp
Okay, so Johnny doesn’t look much different, but can we all just agree that he should be in pirate costume 24/7.
11. Meghan Markle
Pffft as if the beautiful and elegant Duchess of Sussex needs a symmetrical face. She married a prince for god’s sake!
12. Robert Downey Jr.
Here’s another example of why facial symmetry does not mean perfection.
So there we have it: very few people look good when both sides of their face match up entirely. Consider the myth totally and utterly dispelled.
