By this point, I’m pretty sure that Disney are running the world. They have been an immensely successful mass media and entertainment conglomerate for 93 years now, and they don’t seem to be slowing down one bit. In 2009, they acquired Marvel Entertainment, giving them ownership over the tremendously popular superhero movies of the Marvel cinematic universe. A few years later, in 2012, the Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm, giving them ownership over Star Wars.
Soon after they announced that they would not just start making films set in the universe of Jedi and Sith, but they would be releasing one movie each year. By 2016, Disney was responsible for all five of the top-grossing movies of the entire year; the combined efforts of Captain America: Civil War, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Finding Dory, Zootopia and The Jungle Book making over $5.2 billion altogether.
So it’s not surprising to find that they want to expand into all kinds of media, and that they would need their own event to announce any of it. The D23 Expo, which takes its name from 1923, the year the company was founded, is a biennial convention where a lot of news about their upcoming releases are glimpsed for the first time.
As always, the company had plenty to reveal this year, even going as far as introducing a new way to experience the Star Wars universe.
Building on the announcement from the 2015’s D23 Expo that Disney will be building a Star Wars theme park titled Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it has now been revealed that there is an exciting aspect of the park they have been holding back until now. As part of their “360 vacation” concept, you will take part in your own personal adventure at a Star Wars hotel.
The idea is that you will become a citizen of the galaxy, provided with a costume and your own storyline. The narrative you follow will take place over your stay, which is located on a spaceship. Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, said to the crowd:
“We are working on our most experiential concept ever, it combines a luxury resort with immersion in an authentic environment. It’s unlike anything that exists today. From the second you arrive, you will become a part of a Star Wars story. You’ll immediately become a citizen of the galaxy and experience all that entails, including dressing up in the proper attire.”
“Once you leave Earth, you will discover a starship alive with characters, stories, and adventures that unfold all around you. It is 100% immersive, and the story will touch every single minute of your day, and it will culminate in a unique journey for every person who visits.”
Launching at Florida’s Disney World in the near future, the project will have you completely immersed in a story, where all the employees are in character as various aliens. “It will invite you to live your own dedicated, multi-day adventure in a galaxy far, far away,” Chapek explained.
The project is currently in development, and it doesn’t even have an official date of release confirmed yet, but it will likely be completed around the same time as the Galaxy’s Edge theme park is. Either way, I know where I’m going for my next vacation.
