Lions Attack Buffalo, Then Quickly Realize They’ve Bitten Off More Than They Can Chew…

When two lions began stalking this lone buffalo, spectators were shocked and filled with anticipation at what they knew was about to happen.

These gripping photos illustrating a story of desperation and raw hunger in the animal kingdom will absolutely stun you, but you will not be able to underestimate the big twist at the end of this tale…

The Brawl Between Beasts

It is a well known fact lions will hunt down buffalo for a good meal in South Africa, and that is exactly what tourist and photographer Oliver Lane witnessed whilst on safari in Hoedspruit at the Timbavati Nature Reserve. Whilst at the Umlani Bushcamp, Oliver Lane managed to get actual live footage of the fight, showing the true power of these beasts in the wilderness.

NEXT: It all began when the safari followed two lions seeking a meal…

Without getting too close, the sightseers spotted these two lions, one male and one female, prowling around the South African woodlands.

1. Out Hunting

These were two lions that were wild, and had never been in captivity. Going too close to the lions could provoke them to attack the humans, but the lions already had something else on their mind. They had already spotted another animal that they were going to make a feast of in the near distance…

NEXT: That was the moment that the buffalo came into sight…

This was the moment when Oliver Lane and the other sightseers on the safari realized what was happening. The lion was stalking a lone buffalo.

2. Preying On Fresh Meat

Usually, buffalos travel around in packs and African buffalos in particular are never that far from watering holes. So for these lions to spot a lone buffalo was definitely their opportunity to get a good meal. Being herbivores, buffalos only eat vegetation and shrubs. But the lions? They love a good piece of meat, and in their eyes, that was exactly what the buffalo was.

The lions both begin to circle the buffalo, knowing that he is alone. The buffalo stands unmoving, startled by the lions’ presence, and terrified of what he knows will soon happen…

3. Identifying The Target

At this point, the male lion is trying to identify where the buffalo’s weak spot is, and what is the best course of action to take. Meanwhile, the buffalo keeps its eye fixed on the lion, ready to turn around and show it its horns if necessary. But what was going to happen? Who would win this battle if a brawl kicked off?

NEXT: Suddenly, the male lion faces the buffalo head on…

You can see the fear in the buffalo’s eyes, at this point it had frozen, rooted to the ground. The one thing as an animal that you don’t want is for any predators to smell fear…

4. Staring It Out

The onlookers knew the two animals had reached the point where an attack on the buffalo was inevitable. The lion was going to strike. Signalling its female counterpart to come over, the buffalo stumbled around, facing its predators, ready to fight off any attack. But the buffalo wasn’t going to be fast enough for these two lions…

NEXT: The buffalo bent down its head, ready to charge…

The male lion growled viciously at the buffalo, signalling to its mate to make the attack. The buffalo lowered its head, facing its two attackers, scared of the outcome.

5. The Predators Get Ready

How would a lone buffalo fight off two deadly predators? Dust from the sand lifted, as the three beasts waited, their hearts beating fast. The onlookers had no idea what they were about to witness, except for the wrath of hungry lions and a poor buffalo with no herd to protect it. The buffalo was doomed…

NEXT: All of a sudden, the lion sprang towards the buffalo…

Less than two heartbeats later, the male lion pounced on the buffalo, invading its personal space, and making a move to bring down the horned creature.

6. The Fight Begins

The buffalo responded bending its knees and lowering its head, in attempt to fend off the attack. But the fight had already begun. Terror and anticipation filled the air as two of Africa’s large animals fought – the lions for food, and the buffalo for its life. The lion sprung out of the way of the buffalo’s large horns, avoiding its defensive push.

NEXT: Both animals jump backwards, eyeing each other up…

The onlookers gasped in shock and horror as the lion ripped through the air and onto the back of the buffalo, clawing at its tough skin, whilst sinking in its claws.

8. The Fast Pounce

You can see how the female lion is hanging on to the buffalo with her back legs not even touching the ground as she attempts to get a grip on the buffalos backside with both her claws and her teeth. Meanwhile, the buffalo cries out, fearing his life will soon be over as the male lion knocks him off his balance…

NEXT: But the buffalo keeps on going, trying to move out of the deadly situation…

There is no hope in sight for the poor male buffalo…

NEXT: The lions then put their whole entire weight on the buffalo…

12. Weight Distribution

The buffalo’s strong body cannot withstand the force of the lions, and slowly, his legs begin to give way. Will he survive this terrible ordeal, or is this the end for the buffalo? Without being able to see the lions on his back, and with his horns facing forwards, the buffalo is helpless. Then came the final blow…

NEXT: What the male lion did next signified the buffalo’s defeat…

As amazing as it is to see animals behave like this in the wild, it is also a little saddening that animals must hunt each other to live. The fear and desperation in the buffalo’s hairy face says it all.

13. The Final Blow

This buffalo wanted to survive, and was clearly terrified of his attackers, who had probably been stalking him for quite some time. But when the male lion sunk his teeth into the male buffalo, whilst his paws clawed at the buffalo’s legs, the buffalo knew it was all over for him. He stumbled on the sandy grass, kicking up the dirt around where his body was falling…

NEXT: This image of the buffalo is indeed a sorry sight…

At last, the lions had one, and they kept the buffalo on the floor, who lay still, tired and unable to move with the huge weight of the big cats’ bodies pushing down on him. There was no escape.

14. Planning The Feast

The male lion attempted to cleverly turn the buffalo over so that he would be completely unable to stand again. Then he would be able to make the kill, and the two lions would be able to feast on the buffalo’s carcass. There was no need to rush the kill, but the two lions didn’t want to let their dinner go anytime soon…

NEXT: The lions decide it’s time to make the final bite…

The lions had managed to successfully pin down their prey onto the ground, and were ready to demolish the poor buffalo.

NEXT: Suddenly, the female lion feels threatened by the buffalos…

The herd of buffalos all began kicking up the dust and huffing and puffing! It was a remarkable sight to see how a herd could possibly work together to save the life of a fellow member of their species.

19. One Flees The Scene

The female lion, fearing for her safety, jumped up and away from the injured buffalo that she had just brought down along with her mate. The thought of a herd of angry buffalos charging with their horns at her was too much to handle. But the male lion on the other hand was not deterred in the slightest…

20. The Angry Stares

The herd of buffalos had given the lion his opportunity to stop and flee, but it appeared that the male lion did not want to change his mind. He was determined to eat this buffalo, despite the herd watching on. Lions in the wild eat on average between 10 and 25 pounds of food every day, but a male lion can in fact eat up to 43 kilograms if he so desires.

NEXT: It appeared the buffalos were baffled, and did not know what to do…

Seeing as the buffalos had frozen in front of the male lion, who continued to attempt to bite into the injured buffalo beneath him, his female counterpart decided to return…

21. The Female Returns

They had decided it was time to move their meal somewhere else, and although the buffalo was still alive on the ground, there was not much that the other buffalos watching could do. The lions had won, and wanted to eat their meal in peace. But one particular buffalo in the crowd had other ideas…

NEXT: The lions begin to drag the poor, helpless buffalo away…

Seeing the rage building up in the buffalo’s eyes, the male lion decides to start dragging away the buffalo by its neck.

22. The Buffalo Boss

The spring away of the female lion scares a few of the buffalos, who turn around and run the other direction in fear for their own lives. But one buffalo continues to stare out the male lion, and decides that enough is enough. This brave buffalo, who was at the front of the herd, shows who’s really boss…

NEXT: You will never believe what the boss buffalo does next…

Realizing that a member of his herd is now in grave danger, the main buffalo at the front of the herd bends down, facing his horns at the male lion this time…

23. Enough Is Enough

The head buffalo knocks the lion over and seeing the strength and aggression in the buffalo’s eyes, even the male lion is shocked by this brave buffalo’s response. This time, the fear is on the lions side, and as his partner steps away to see how the main male lion will react, the boss buffalo knocks the male lion onto his back too…

NEXT: As quickly as possible, the lion springs back into action…

The male lion quickly notices that the head buffalo was not going to give up. After taking a blow from his rock solid horns, the male lion jumps up to run the other direction.

24. The Tables Turn

Perhaps he can ring around and attack the injured buffalo once again whilst the herd of buffalos’ backs are turned. But as he springs up to flee, it appears he and his partner have lost their big kill for the day. The main buffalo makes haste, and after rolling the injured buffalo over onto his front again, starts the chase…

NEXT: This is a sight you won’t see too often in the wild!

The main buffalo charges after the male lion, who runs away as the herd of buffalos follow their leader. It seems that anger pushes the head buffalo on to chase the predators away.

25. The Predator Becomes The Prey

The lion, unable to obtain his meal, quickly exits the scene of the crime, as the buffalos give chase with their horns at the ready. It was the end of a dangerous encounter, but would the buffalo finish off the job? It is not unheard of that a herd of buffalos have killed a lion before… would this be the case, and the end of our main predator?

NEXT: The lion begins to run away from its new attackers…

It appears that seeing the lion flee the scene was enough for the main buffalo, who watched on, following a little as the lion tucked its tail between its legs.

26. The Chase Kicks Off

If the lion were to turn around at this moment, there is no telling what would happen – the buffalo would surely kill him, potentially spearing the lion’s body with his extremely strong horns. How their roles had been reversed in the wilderness of the African outback was incredible.

NEXT: Lastly, the lion escapes without a scratch…

The injured buffalo managed to get back to his feet and trot to safety, where half the herd surrounded him. After the lion had fled, the head buffalo watched on, still making the lion keep its distance.

27. Both Teams Depart

Lions are exceptionally fast, and can run up to speeds of 80 kilometers per hour in short bursts. This lion had learnt its lesson – never bite off more than you can chew. The onlookers who had witnessed this incredible scene were amazed by the power of both of the creatures. It just goes to show that the animal world is even more brutal than we can begin to imagine.

The injured buffalo survived its horrendous ordeal, and has also learnt never to wander too far from its herd, I’m sure. But when a lone buffalo’s back is turned, you can be assured that they will make a fantastic meal for a hungry pack of lions.
