Since his mother’s death this past December, former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has been fulfilling wishes that his beloved mom told him before she passed. Tomlinson’s mother, Johannah Deakin, was only 43 years old when she lost her battle to a “very aggressive form” of leukaemia, after being suddenly diagnosed earlier in 2016.
Tomlinson, 25, received praise and admiration for the live performance he did just three days after his mothers passing, when he debuted his solo single, Just Hold On, on the X Factor. He said that it was his mother’s final wish that he go through with the performance. The heartbreaking song received a standing ovation, and the public’s admiration for Tomlinson’s dedication to his late mother continues even months later, now with Tomlinson facing another challenge in his life at the request of his mom: mending his relationship with Zayn Malik.
It is no secret that when Zayn Malik left One Direction in 2015, it caused a serious rift between him and the other band members, with Tomlinson seeming to be the most upset by the decision. The two did not speak for two years, and the distance between them was palpable.
But last month, Tomlinson revealed to The Sun
that before she passed, his mother urged him to reconcile with his former bandmate and friend:
“My mum said, ‘You’ve got to get back in contact with Zayn. Life’s too f*cking short’. A mother’s intuition is just f*cking crazy. It always felt supernatural to me. My mum always knew what I was feeling and what I wanted. I can’t stand to hold a grudge with anyone. It doesn’t sit with me right. If there is any animosity, just clear the air.”
After telling the public that his mother had guided him to mend ties with Zayn, we didn’t hear much about any rekindling between the friends. But while appearing on Andy Cohen Live recently, Louis told Andy that they’ve begun to mend the friendship, and he considers them to be “mates again”:
“We got back in touch with each other and kind of cleared the air and talked everything through. So we’re mates again, I suppose. Like anything like that, it takes time. But it was nice that we had an opportunity to clear the air and be adults about it, I suppose.”
Louis has described his initial friendship with Zayn as stemming from being the two troublemakers in the band. He said the friendship turned into “brotherly love” after a video surfaced in 2014 showing them allegedly smoking marijuana, leading to a controversy that they had to navigate together:
“Zayn was always good for me in the band because he was my go-to if I wanted to p*ss around, lark around. I could always break the rules a little bit with Zayn. So after that whole thing, it was that brotherly love. We will always have that love for each other. I can’t speak on behalf of him but we really care about each other.”
One Direction fans everywhere are celebrating the rekindled friendship, even hoping that it might clear the way for the band to, one day, get back together. But it doesn’t look like it’ll be happening anytime soon, with all of them currently being in the middle of launching promising solo careers. Here’s to hoping, One Directioners.
